Hi, I’m Anna. Ask For Anna is a small, independent blog, and I’m the person behind it. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it.
I’ve tried to write it in plain language. Where it gets technical, that’s because a vague answer wouldn’t be a fair one. If anything is unclear, write to me at [email protected].
Who Is Responsible for Your Information
Ask For Anna (askforanna.com) is owned and run by me. I decide what this site collects and how it is used, which makes me the “data controller” under laws like the GDPR. Any privacy question, request, or complaint goes to [email protected].
This page works together with the Terms of Service.
What Is Collected When You Read the Site
Like most websites, this one runs on a server that keeps logs of incoming requests. These logs include your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you asked for, the site that sent you here (if any), and the date and time. They exist to keep the site online, fast, and protected from attacks. I don’t go through them looking at individual visitors.
The logs are handled by my web hosting provider, which processes this data on my behalf.
Analytics
I use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use the site: how many visitors come, which articles they read, roughly which countries they’re in, and whether pages work well on phones. It helps me learn that, say, a small-bedroom storage guide is popular. It does not tell me who read it.
Google Analytics uses cookies and processes this data on Google’s servers. How Google handles it is described in the Google Privacy Policy, and Google explains how it uses data from sites like this one at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. If you’d rather not be counted, Google offers a browser add-on that turns off Analytics on every site you visit.
I use Analytics for measurement only. I have not turned on Google’s advertising features, such as audience building or ad personalization, in my account.
Advertising
This site shows ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, show ads on this site and use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
Ads are chosen by Google and its advertising partners, not by me. You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings at adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising through the Digital Advertising Alliance at youradchoices.com/control or the Network Advertising Initiative at optout.networkadvertising.org.
If you visit from the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you will see a consent message before advertising cookies are used. You can change your choice at any time through the Privacy settings link in the footer.
When You Write to Me
If you email me, I receive your email address, your name (if it’s in your message), and whatever you write. I use it to reply to you and for nothing else. Writing to me doesn’t sign you up for anything.
Comments
Comments are currently switched off, so no names, email addresses, or comment content are being collected. If I turn them on, I’ll update this page first and say exactly what is collected.
Affiliate Links
Some posts contain affiliate links. If you click one and buy something, I may earn a small commission, and the price you pay stays the same.
For that to work, the retailer or affiliate network places a cookie on your device to record that you came from Ask For Anna. That cookie belongs to them and is covered by their privacy policy. What comes back to me is a summary, such as items ordered and commission earned, never your name, address, or payment details. Sponsored posts and gifted products are always marked clearly at the top of the article.
Links to Other Sites
Articles link to stores, brands, and other websites, and sometimes to social platforms such as Pinterest. Once you follow a link, you’re on their site and their policies apply. I can’t control how other companies handle your information, so please read their policies before sharing anything.
Cookies, Briefly
A cookie is a small file that a website stores in your browser so it can remember things between visits. Here is what’s in use:
- Necessary: basic site function and security
- Analytics: Google Analytics, to count and understand readers
- Advertising: set by Google and its advertising partners to show and measure ads
- Affiliate: set by a retailer or network when you click a shopping link
Every browser lets you see, delete, and block cookies. AllAboutCookies.org explains how. Blocking everything will break parts of many websites, so being selective works better.
Where the law requires it, such as for visitors in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, a consent notice appears before analytics and advertising cookies are allowed to run. You can change your choice at any time through the Privacy settings link in the footer.
Browser Signals
I honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal. If your browser or extension sends it, I treat it as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information.
I don’t respond to the older “Do Not Track” header, because the industry never agreed on what it should mean. GPC is the signal that works here.
If You Live in the United States
Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, and a growing list of other states have rights over their personal information. Depending on your state, you may be able to know what is collected, get a copy, correct it, delete it, and opt out of its sale, sharing, or use for targeted advertising. Using these rights will never cost you access to the site or lead to worse treatment.
I don’t sell your personal information for money. The advertising cookies described above may count as “sharing” or “targeted advertising” under some state laws. You can opt out through the Privacy settings link in the footer, through Google’s Ads Settings, or by sending a Global Privacy Control signal.
To make a request, email [email protected] and say what you’d like. I may need to confirm it’s really you, usually by replying from the address connected to your information. I aim to respond within 45 days and will tell you if a request needs longer. An authorized agent can make a request for you with your written permission.
I don’t collect “sensitive personal information” as those laws define it.
If You Live in the UK, EEA, or Switzerland
You have the right to access your data, correct it, have it erased, restrict or object to its processing, receive it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent doesn’t undo what was lawfully done before.
The legal grounds I rely on:
- Consent: for analytics and advertising cookies
- Legitimate interests: keeping the site running and secure, preventing abuse, and replying when you write to me
- Legal obligation: where I must keep records or respond to a lawful request
The site is hosted in the United States, so your information may be transferred outside your country when you visit. My service providers rely on safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and, where applicable, the EU-US and UK-US Data Privacy Frameworks.
Send requests to [email protected]. If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled something, you can complain to your national data protection authority, such as the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK. I’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.
How Long Information Is Kept
- Server logs: kept briefly by my host, then deleted automatically
- Analytics: Google deletes event-level data after the retention period set in my account. Aggregated reports remain afterward.
- Emails you send me: kept while the conversation is relevant, then cleared out periodically
Keeping Information Secure
The site uses HTTPS, its software is kept up to date, and admin access is limited to me and protected by a strong, unique password.
No website is impossible to breach. What I can say is that very little personal information is held here to begin with, and if something went wrong in a way that affected you, I’d tell you.
Children
Ask For Anna is written for adults. It isn’t directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets that age), and I don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has sent me their details, email me and I’ll delete them.
Changes to This Policy
When something changes, such as a new tool or a new legal requirement, I’ll update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes, such as adding advertising or a newsletter, I’ll update the page before the change goes live.
Getting in Touch
For anything on this page, or any request about your information, email [email protected]. I answer most messages within 48 hours, and formal privacy requests within the timeframes the law sets.
— Anna
